BMW M3 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 9 faults the BMW M3 is known for (2007–2013), 8 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the BMW M3

M3/M4 fuel tank seam leak

Safety risk

2014–2020 · S55, S55B30 · petrol · Body and structure

What to look for: Smell for petrol around the rear of the car, and look underneath for damp or staining near the tank.

Why it matters: A leaking tank near a hot exhaust is a fire risk; typically NZ$3,000-$6,500 for a new tank.

M3 rear subframe cracking

Costly if missed

2000–2006 · S54, S54B32 · petrol · Body and structure

What to look for: Lie beside the car and look at each rear subframe mount for cracked sealer, rust lines or new welding.

Why it matters: A torn subframe mount lets the rear axle move and can rip the boot floor; repairs commonly run NZ$3,500-$8,000.

M3 VANOS wear and failure

Costly if missed

2000–2006 · S54, S54B32 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Cold start then warm idle, listening for a rattle or tick from the front of the head and a lumpy idle.

Why it matters: Worn VANOS costs power and a sheared bolt can drop metal into the timing case; typically NZ$1,500-$4,500.

M3 SMG gearbox pump failure

Costly if missed

2000–2006 · S54, S54B32 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: On the test drive try several up and down shifts in each mode, and listen for the pump buzzing long at door-open.

Why it matters: A failing SMG pump can drop the car into neutral while driving; typically NZ$3,000-$7,000, or a manual conversion.

M3 V8 rod bearing wear

Costly if missed

2007–2013 · S65, S65B40 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: With the engine fully warm, listen at idle and at 2,500 to 3,500 rpm for a light knock or tick.

Why it matters: Preventive bearing replacement is typically NZ$4,500-$8,000; a spun bearing on this high-revving V8 usually ends the engine and costs far more.

M3 throttle actuator failure

Costly if missed

2007–2013 · S65, S65B40 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Bonnet up, ignition on and engine off: listen at the top front of the engine for grinding or whirring.

Why it matters: A failed actuator drops the car into limp mode without warning; typically NZ$2,000-$5,500 to replace both.

S55 crank hub slip

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · S55, S55B30 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Ask for proof of a pinned or keyed crank hub, and check the scan for cam or crank timing codes.

Why it matters: If the hub slips the valves can hit the pistons, which usually means a rebuilt or replaced engine. A tuned car without a pinned hub carries that risk, so price it in or ask for the upgrade first.

Rear jacking point rust

Costly if missed

2005–2006 · S54, S54B32 · petrol · Body and structure

What to look for: Check the sills at each jack pad and inside the rear wheel arch lips for bubbling or flaking rust.

Why it matters: Owners have had cars written off for jack-point and underbody rot; small surface bubbles are a paint job, but rotten jack points need cutting out and welding in repair sections, which is a structural repair, not cosmetic touch-up.

Sticky door pulls

Minor

2007–2013 · petrol · Interior and air con

What to look for: Feel the door pulls and grab handles on both front doors for a tacky or peeling coating.

Why it matters: It is cosmetic only, but it is very common by this age and makes the cabin look worn; fixes range from stripping the coating to replacing the handles or a section of the door card.
