Ford Ranger PX common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 12 faults the Ford Ranger PX is known for (2011–2018), 8 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Ford Ranger PX

Sudden downshift into first gear

Safety risk

2011–2013 · automatic transmission (recall notice does not specify engine or transmission variant) · Gearbox

What to look for: Drive warm at 60 to 80 km/h, feeling for a sudden harsh downshift or gearbox warning, and ask for the recall record.

Why it matters: The register hazard is loss of vehicle control from the rear tyres locking; the register advised owners to drive with caution until repaired.

6R80 lead frame wears out

Safety risk

2014–2022 · P4AT, P5AT, 2.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: On the test drive, watch the speedo for sudden drops to zero and feel for a harsh thump slowing to a stop.

Why it matters: A sudden, unexpected downshift while driving is a safety concern as well as a costly transmission repair, and PX2-on trucks are reported to be better but not immune.

Coolant loss and white exhaust smoke

Costly if missed

2011–2022 · 2.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Check the cold coolant level, look for white sweet-smelling exhaust smoke that won't clear, and milky gunk under the oil cap.

Why it matters: A split EGR cooler can take out the head gasket, bend rods or crack the head; the repair escalates from a cooler to an engine.

Leaking diesel injectors

Costly if missed

2011–2022 · 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Listen at cold start for a loud diesel knock that doesn't settle, and watch for a surging idle in Drive.

Why it matters: A leaking injector can melt or hole a piston; injector replacement on the 3.2 is a five-injector job.

Sudden power loss, limp mode

Costly if missed

2011–2018 · 2.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Drive for 20 minutes including a long hill or highway pull, and feel for sudden power loss that a restart fixes.

Why it matters: A sticking injector-pump piston is a high-pressure pump replacement; a kinked return line is cheap. The two need to be told apart before pricing.

Worn clutch or flywheel

Costly if missed

2011–2022 · 2.2 Duratorq TDCi manual, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi manual · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: Feel for pulsing through the clutch pedal, shudder when pulling away, and a hard shift from first to second.

Why it matters: Clutch plus DMF on a Ranger is a major job; towing history multiplies the risk.

Doors not latching properly

Costly if missed

2010–2016 · all · Body and structure

What to look for: Check every door latches on the first close, and doesn't move or show 'door ajar' when pushed from inside.

Why it matters: A door opening on the move is a fall-out hazard.

Oil pump/chain wears, ticks

Costly if missed

2011–2022 · P5AT, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 · diesel · Engine

What to look for: At hot idle after the drive, listen for ticking or knocking low in the engine and watch for a flickering oil light.

Why it matters: A failing oil pump or its drive chain can starve the engine of oil and, in the worst case, spin a bearing and destroy the engine, so any ticking at idle is worth investigating before buying.

Heater hose rubbing under fuel filter

Minor

2011–2014 · 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Look at the heater hose under the fuel filter for a braided protective sleeve, rub marks or coolant staining.

Why it matters: A chafed heater hose leaks coolant slowly and is a common cause of unexplained coolant loss on early 3.2 Rangers.

Growl when shifting out of Park

Minor

2013–2014 · 6R80 6-speed automatic · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: Listen with the window down for a growl or buzz when shifting from Park to Reverse or Drive after it has sat.

Why it matters: The bulletin repair is a valve body job; ignoring it means buying a noise the next owner will complain about.

Heater stuck hot or cold

Minor

2011–2013 · all · diesel · Interior and air con

What to look for: Listen for clicking behind the dash at start-up, and check both sides' vents change from full cold to full hot.

Why it matters: Dash-out actuator replacement is labour-heavy; a stuck-hot cab is a customer complaint within a week.

Oil light staying on after service

Keep an eye on

2011–2022 · 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Check the oil warning light goes out within five seconds of a cold start, and switch off at once if it doesn't.

Why it matters: Running a 3.2 with an unprimed oil pump risks bearing damage on the very first start after a service.
