Holden Cruze JG common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Holden Cruze JG is known for (2009–2014), 3 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Holden Cruze JG

Fuel hose leak

Safety risk

2009–2011 · 1.8 petrol (JG), 2.0 diesel (Z20 family) · Engine

What to look for: Smell for fuel and look for wet patches at the engine bay fuel hose ends, and ask for the recall record.

Why it matters: Fuel leak in the engine bay is a fire and WOF item; a rectified recall costs nothing, an unrectified one is a reason to hold the deal.

Twisted front brake hoses

Safety risk

2009–2014 · Brakes

What to look for: Look at the front brake hoses on full lock for twists or stains, and feel for a pedal that softens when pumped.

Why it matters: Gradual loss of braking; also one of the largest Holden recalls by volume so a large share of NZ Cruze stock is in scope.

Takata airbag recall

Costly if missed

2010–2018 · Paperwork

What to look for: Check the VIN on recalls.govt.nz or with GM/Holden NZ, and look for a recall completion sticker in the door jamb.

Why it matters: An outstanding Takata replacement is a disclosure item for a trader and, on the models the ACCC placed under 'critical recall', a stop-drive level defect. The replacement is free.
