Known problems on the Holden Cruze JH
Oil pooling under engine fault
Safety risk
2012–2013 · A14NET 1.4 turbo · petrol · Engine
What to look for: Look at the undertray under the engine for pooled oil or scorch marks, and ask for the recall record.
Why it matters: Fire hazard recall; also a signal that the engine may be leaking oil. Outstanding recall work is free but takes the car off the yard.
What to look for: Look at the right-hand driveshaft for a bent or dented tube, and listen for a clunk when taking off.
Why it matters: A separated driveshaft means sudden loss of drive; on the yard it means a tow and a warranty claim. Free to fix under recall if outstanding.
2011–2014 · A14NET (GM LUJ/LUV 1.4T) · petrol · Engine
What to look for: Check the coolant level when cold, and look on and below the water pump for dried coolant crust or wet stains.
Why it matters: Slow coolant loss leads to overheating and reduced power on this small turbo engine; head damage from an overheat is far more than the pump. Cheap to confirm, expensive to ignore.
What to look for: Check the VIN on recalls.govt.nz or with GM/Holden NZ, and look for a recall completion sticker in the door jamb.
Why it matters: An outstanding Takata replacement is a disclosure item for a trader and, on the models the ACCC placed under 'critical recall', a stop-drive level defect. The replacement is free.
