Kia Kia Sportage common problems: what to check before you buy
Credov's researched list of the 6 faults the Kia Kia Sportage is known for (2005–2010), 6 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.
Known problems on the Kia Kia Sportage
ABS unit leak, brakes lock
Safety risk
2005–2010 · Brakes
What to look for: Under the bonnet, check the ABS unit by the firewall for weeping fluid or scorching, and watch for ABS lights staying on.
Why it matters: Owners describe the brakes locking on or barely working, and in some cases a fire starting at the ABS unit while the car is parked. A used KM with this fault can leave a driver without reliable brakes or with a fire starting under the bonnet.
2010–2015 · G4KD, G4KE, G4KJ, G4KH · petrol · Engine
What to look for: Listen at idle and revving to 3,000 rpm for a deep knock or tap from the bottom of the engine.
Why it matters: This is a widely reported bottom-end failure on this engine family that can seize the engine or stop the car while driving, including loss of power steering and brake assist at speed, and the usual fix is a full engine replacement.
What to look for: Check the oil level before starting, and watch for blue smoke on start-up or when revving after idling.
Why it matters: This engine is the most complained-about Sportage engine of this era, burning oil heavily and often failing completely, usually needing a full engine replacement.
What to look for: Ask for a dated timing belt and water pump receipt, and listen at the front of the engine for whine or rattle.
Why it matters: A snapped timing belt stops the engine without warning and usually bends valves, turning a routine service item into a cylinder-head repair. Many of these cars are now old enough that the age limit has been reached even where the kilometres are low.
What to look for: Ask for a dated timing belt receipt, and look for marks showing the belt-side engine mount has been off.
Why it matters: A snapped timing belt on this engine stops it immediately and usually causes valve damage, and the awkward access means the job is sometimes skipped or done poorly, so proof of the work matters more than on an easier engine.
What to look for: Drive at low revs then accelerate firmly, watching for hesitation, surging or a stall coming to a stop.
Why it matters: A sticking EGR valve can cause the engine to stall or lose power without warning, including at an intersection, and the common workaround of blanking the EGR off is an emissions modification that can fail a WoF.
