Lexus CT200h common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Lexus CT200h is known for (2010–2018), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Fuel leak when filling up

Safety risk

2016–2018 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Engine

What to look for: Look at the filler area and the ground under it while filling, and smell the filler neck for petrol.

Why it matters: Lexus told MLIT that the welding equipment settings for the resin fuel tank were wrong, so the inlet pipe was welded to the tank at an angle and part of the joint face is not fully fused; the joint face can then peel apart and fuel leaks while refuelling or when the tank is full. This build window is recent enough that these cars are still moving through the New Zealand import trade.

Petrol smell at the rear

Costly if missed

2010–2015 · 2ZR-FXE, 2AZ-FXE · hybrid · Exhaust and emissions

What to look for: Smell inside the boot, around the rear seat base and under the rear of the car for petrol, ideally after a fill.

Why it matters: Lexus told MLIT that the end shape of the resin vapour passage in the evaporative emission control system was wrong, that a crack forms at that end in service, and that with long use the crack goes right through so fuel leaks and there is a fuel smell when the tank is full. Sellers often deliver a Japanese import part filled, which is exactly the condition that hides this.

Electric brake unit wear

Costly if missed

2010–2022 · Brakes

What to look for: Check for warning lights that stay on together, and look for a mid-2025 brake campaign entry in the service book.

Why it matters: Lexus notified a service campaign in Japan stating that on the electric brake actuator, frequent braking wears the hydraulic control valve earlier than expected, that several warning lamps then light together, and that continued use brings on a buzzer and needs more pedal effort for less braking.

Head gasket failure

Costly if missed

2010–2022 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Engine

What to look for: Start it stone cold and watch for a shake or rough running for the first 10-15 seconds.

Why it matters: Left alone this leads to ongoing coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke, misfire codes and eventually a check-hybrid-system warning. The repair is a head gasket job or a replacement engine, either a major cost on a car this size.
