Lexus GS460 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Lexus GS460 is known for (2006–2013), 3 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Lexus GS460

Fuel leak at the pressure sensor

Safety risk

2006–2013 · 4GR-FSE, 3GR-FSE, 2GR-FSE, 1UR-FSE · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Smell for petrol and look for dark fuel stains around the fuel pressure sensor, and ask for the recall records.

Why it matters: Three AU register entries (2011, 2014, 2016) describe the same failure path: insufficiently tightened sensor, then a gasket whose sealing degrades over time, leading to a fuel leak with a fire hazard. A car with the campaign outstanding is a liability to retail.

Engine valve spring fault

Safety risk

2006–2008 · 2GR-FSE, 1UR-FSE, 2UR-FSE · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen at idle from cold for ticking, rattling or an uneven idle, and ask for the valve spring recall record.

Why it matters: The register states the valve spring material may not have sufficient strength, may crack and break. A broken spring can stop the engine while driving and can put a valve into a piston - an engine-out repair on a car worth less than the fix.

Brake warning lights and buzzer

Costly if missed

2005–2016 · Brakes

What to look for: Check that the brake warning light doesn't stay on with other lights after start-up, and listen for a repeating buzzer.

Why it matters: Lexus published a free repair programme in Japan stating that with heavy, frequent braking the solenoid valve section of the brake actuator wears, the brake warning lamp and others light, and that if the car keeps being used in that state the buzzer sounds and braking becomes less effective.
