Mazda Mazda BT-50 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 7 faults the Mazda Mazda BT-50 is known for (2011–2020), 7 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Mazda Mazda BT-50

EGR cooler can crack the head

Costly if missed

2006–2011 · WEAT, WE-AT, WEC · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Cold engine: check the coolant level and look for a tide mark, then watch the gauge on a long climb.

Why it matters: A split EGR cooler gives almost no warning before the engine overheats, and repeated overheating is what cracks the head, turning a moderate cooler job into an engine rebuild. A cold coolant check and a watch on the gauge during a longer drive are the cheapest way to catch it.

Timing belt due around 120,000 km

Costly if missed

2006–2011 · WEAT, WE-AT, WEC, WLAT · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Ask for a dated receipt showing the timing belt, tensioner and idler were replaced, and at what kilometres.

Why it matters: A snapped timing belt bends valves on this engine and usually means a head rebuild, so proof the belt interval was kept is one of the most valuable things you can check before buying a used BT-50 3.0.

Manual clutch and flywheel wear early

Costly if missed

2011–2020 · P4AT, P5AT · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: Pull away gently on a slope and feel for judder through the clutch pedal and floor.

Why it matters: A clutch job on this truck usually needs the dual-mass flywheel replaced too, which is a big bill, and early signs (judder, a rattly idle, a high bite point) are easy to feel for free on the test drive.

Automatic speedo drops, downshifts hard

Costly if missed

2011–2020 · P4AT, P5AT · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: Drive until the gearbox is hot, then watch the speedo and feel for a sudden hard downshift.

Why it matters: Once the sensor drops out the gearbox can slam into gear or stick in first with no warning, which is both a safety issue and, if ignored, a cause of worn clutches and valve-body damage. A longer test drive that gets the box properly hot is the only way to catch it.

EGR cooler can split, lose coolant

Costly if missed

2011–2020 · P4AT, P5AT · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Cold engine: check the coolant tank level for a dried tide mark, and look for sweet-smelling white smoke.

Why it matters: Consequences range up to a blown head gasket, a cracked head or, if enough coolant enters a cylinder, bent conrods, so catching a weeping or already-failing cooler before buying can save an engine rebuild.

Oil pump can lose prime, wreck engine

Costly if missed

2011–2020 · P5AT · diesel · Engine

What to look for: At start-up the oil warning light must go out within about 5 seconds; listen for knocking at idle.

Why it matters: This fault can destroy the engine within seconds of a bad service if the pump loses prime, so who serviced the truck and whether the oil light clears quickly at start-up matter more on this engine than on most.

Injectors can leak and damage a piston

Costly if missed

2011–2020 · P5AT · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Listen at idle for an uneven knock, check the dipstick for oil above full or a diesel smell, and watch for smoke.

Why it matters: Left unchecked, a leaking injector's excess fuel can melt or hole a piston, so idle noise, the dipstick and smoke on the drive are worth checking on any 3.2 BT-50 past about 70,000 km.
