Diesel carbon can block oil pick-up
Costly if missed
2008–2012 · R2AA · diesel · Engine
What to look for: Pull the dipstick: sludgy, gritty or strong-smelling oil points to carbon blocking the oil pick-up.
Why it matters: Once carbon blocks the oil pick-up the engine runs with no oil pressure and is usually destroyed, even on a well-serviced car, turning a cheap injector-seal job into an engine replacement. Oil condition and service history are the only warning most buyers get.
What to look for: Cold start then idle a couple of minutes, blip the throttle and watch for blue-white smoke.
Why it matters: A failing turbo can shed metal into the intercooler and engine on its way out, so a smoky cold start or a whine on boost caught now is far cheaper than a turbo failure that also damages the engine it feeds.
What to look for: Lie beside the car with a torch and look at the transfer case above the right front driveshaft for oil wetting.
Why it matters: Low oil from an unnoticed seal leak leads to a worn and eventually failed transfer case, and CarsGuide notes the repair is not always too difficult but can still be costly, so an oil-wetness check under the car is well worth the two minutes it takes.
