Mazda Mazda CX-9 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Mazda Mazda CX-9 is known for (2007–2016), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Mazda Mazda CX-9

Brake booster can fail, pedal goes hard

Safety risk

2007–2016 · Brakes

What to look for: Pump the brake pedal with the engine off, hold it, start the engine and feel for the pedal sinking slightly.

Why it matters: A failed booster means a hard pedal and a much longer stopping distance with little warning, and some owners describe near misses from it, so the pedal-sink test at start-up is one of the most important checks on this model.

2.5 turbo head cracks, leaks coolant

Costly if missed

2016–2024 · PY-VPTS · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Check the coolant tank for a tide line, and smell for sweet coolant at the back of the engine.

Why it matters: Coolant loss on this engine often ends up contaminating the oil, and the usual repair is a full engine or long block rather than just the head, with out-of-warranty quotes in the thousands. A coolant and heater check before buying is far cheaper than finding out on the side of the road.

Internal water pump mixes coolant into oil

Costly if missed

2007–2016 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Pull the dipstick and oil filler cap and look for milky, light-brown or foamy oil.

Why it matters: Because the pump is inside the engine, many failures give little warning before coolant has already contaminated the oil, at which point a replacement engine is usually needed rather than a simple pump swap, so the dipstick and coolant checks matter more here than on an external-pump car.

AWD transfer unit can wear out, fail

Costly if missed

2007–2016 · petrol · Drivetrain

What to look for: On the drive listen for a whine or buzz from under the centre of the car that changes with speed.

Why it matters: A worn PTU can strip its splines with no warning and quietly turn an AWD car into a front-drive-only one, and a full replacement unit is a big bill, so the whine test and an oil-change history are both worth checking on any AWD CX-9 of this generation.
