What to look for: If possible see the car after it has sat overnight, and check every corner sits level at the same height.
Why it matters: A leaking strut makes that corner drop after parking and the compressor run far longer to compensate, which eventually burns the compressor out too, turning a strut repair into a bigger bill.
What to look for: Lift the boot floor and side panels and feel for damp carpet, and check every rear light and lock works.
Why it matters: Water damage to the rear SAM causes strange electrical faults - rear lights, central locking or the fuel pump cutting out - and repeats if the source leak is not found and fixed first.
