MG ZST common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the MG ZST is known for (2017–2018), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the MG ZST

Steering column UJ clicking

Safety risk

2017–2025 · Suspension and steering

What to look for: At walking pace and when stopped, turn the wheel lock to lock and feel or listen for a click or notch.

Why it matters: A worn universal joint can come apart and cause a sudden, total loss of steering while driving, which is dangerous at any speed; the proper fix is a new steering column or shaft, and a dealer that has only re-tightened the mounting bolts often sees the click return.

Stability control fault, heavy steering

Safety risk

2017–2018 · petrol · Suspension and steering

What to look for: Check the stability control and steering warning lights go out after start, then turn the wheel lock to lock for heavy steering.

Why it matters: Steering that suddenly goes heavy makes the car hard to control in a corner or emergency, and the stability control may not be working either. The software fix is quick at an MG dealer.
