Mitsubishi Pajero SWB common problems: what to check before you buy
Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Mitsubishi Pajero SWB is known for (2006–2021), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

What to look for: At a cold start with the bonnet up, listen for a rattle or slap from the top front of the engine.
Why it matters: Owner reports cluster between about 100,000 and 160,000 km, and Mitsubishi revised the guide for Gen 4. The guide is a cheap part; chain, tensioner and lever are checked at the same time. Repairs reported in the roughly NZ$600-$3,500 range.
What to look for: Roll forward slowly through 2H, 4H and 4HLc, checking the dash lamp goes steady within a few seconds each time.
Why it matters: Just 4x4s' used guide stresses checking every diff lock works without vibration or harshness because replacing these parts is expensive, and lamps that keep flashing are a common complaint. Cars that are never put in 4WD seize their actuators. Repairs reported in the roughly NZ$300-$2,500 range.
What to look for: With the bonnet up and engine idling, look at the crank pulley for a wobble or a step between its rings.
Why it matters: The outer ring can separate and throw the belt (losing alternator, power steering and A/C), and a wobbling pulley wears the crankshaft nose so a new pulley no longer holds, which turns it into an engine-out job. NZ suppliers sell replacement balancers for the NS-NX 4M41. Repairs reported in the roughly NZ$800-$1,400 range.
What to look for: At a cold start, listen for a knock that does not settle, then watch for heavy black smoke under hard acceleration.
Why it matters: One ProductReview owner of an NX GLX had injector failure at 80,000 km. A full set of injectors is a big bill; rebuilds are cheaper. Repairs reported in the roughly NZ$2,500-$6,500 range.
