Nissan Pathfinder R51 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 9 faults the Nissan Pathfinder R51 is known for (2008–2014), 7 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Nissan Pathfinder R51

Timing chain rattle on cold start

Costly if missed

2008–2014 · YD25DDTi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Listen at cold start for a metallic rattle from the front of the engine, loudest in the first 30 seconds.

Why it matters: If the primary chain stretches far enough the valves and pistons can collide, requiring an engine rebuild or replacement. The secondary source recommends chain and tensioner replacement before 80,000 km and inspection every 40,000 km afterwards.

Coolant leak from exhaust cooler

Costly if missed

2008–2014 · YD25DDTi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Check the coolant level when cold and look for white or pink crusty stains around the EGR pipe and cooler.

Why it matters: Continued coolant loss can overheat the engine and damage the head gasket. The secondary source also notes that bypassing the EGR system leaves the vehicle non-compliant with emissions standards.

Timing chain buzz or whine

Costly if missed

2008–2010 · VQ40DE · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen at the front of the warm engine for a buzz or whine that rises with revs.

Why it matters: Secondary chain and tensioner replacement on the VQ40 is a labour-heavy job; the noise identifies work that will be needed.

Shudder at open-road speeds

Costly if missed

2008–2014 · YD25DDTi, VQ40DE · Gearbox

What to look for: Drive at a steady 90-100 km/h, add moderate throttle and feel for a rumble that goes if you press harder.

Why it matters: Torque converter replacement on these vehicles is a transmission-out job.

Driveshaft joint clunk or vibration

Costly if missed

2008–2014 · Drivetrain

What to look for: Feel for free play when rocking the driveshaft by each joint, and listen for a clunk when pulling away.

Why it matters: A failed universal joint can let the propeller shaft separate; the bulletin remedy is joint replacement.

Bonnet catch coming loose fault

Costly if missed

2008–2010 · Body and structure

What to look for: Check the bonnet catch loop isn't cracked or loose, and that the bonnet latches firmly when closed from 30 cm.

Why it matters: A bonnet opening at speed blinds the driver; the fix under recall is free but must be done.

Radiator cooler leaks into gearbox

Costly if missed

2005–2015 · YD25DDTi, VQ40DE · Gearbox

What to look for: Open the coolant cap cold and check for a pink or milky film, and check auto fluid is clear red.

Why it matters: The fix is a new radiator plus a rebuilt or replacement gearbox; prevention is a new radiator before it fails and an external cooler that bypasses the radiator. Affects the 5-speed automatic (RE5R05A) fitted to the 2.5 diesel and 4.0 V6 petrol; manuals are not affected, and the 3.0 V6 diesel used a different 7-speed automatic (RE7R01B).

Exhaust sensor limp mode

Minor

2012–2013 · YD25DDTi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Drive and accelerate firmly from 60 to 100 km/h, feeling for an engine that won't rev past about 2000 rpm.

Why it matters: Limp mode limits engine speed to around 2000 rpm and cuts power; a failed sensor is a known cause on this year band, and a vehicle sold with the fault will come straight back.

Front suspension clunk or squeak

Minor

2008–2014 · Suspension and steering

What to look for: Listen with windows down for a clunk or squeak from the front when turning slowly or going over speed humps.

Why it matters: Cheap to fix but the noise is commonly mistaken for ball joints or shocks; knowing the documented cause avoids over-pricing the repair or missing a real suspension fault.
