Toyota Alphard Hybrid common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Toyota Alphard Hybrid is known for (2003–2015), 3 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Toyota Alphard Hybrid

Hybrid brake actuator (ABS/booster pump) fails, brakes

Safety risk

2011–2015 · 2AZ-FXE · hybrid · Hybrid and EV

What to look for: Listen near the left front of the engine bay for the brake pump running repeatedly or buzzing every 10 seconds.

Why it matters: Early signs are a buzzing or 'squeaking' noise from the pump every few seconds when parked or braking, or the pump running for long periods. When it fails the car beeps, shows VSC/ABS/brake warnings and regenerative braking stops, the pedal goes hard and you need a lot of force to stop. A related fault is the brake control power supply (a capacitor unit that backs up the actuator), which sets ABS lights.

Hybrid cooling pump failure

Costly if missed

2000–2011 · Hybrid and EV

What to look for: Look for a 3055 recall sticker in the driver's door opening, and for hybrid warning lights while it sits in READY.

Why it matters: The MLIT notification records that the winding process for the inverter electric water pump coil was inadequate, so coil wire could be damaged; corrosion then breaks the wire, stopping the pump and producing a warning lamp or output-limited running, and a short between windings blows the supply fuse and leaves the car unable to be driven.

Brake warning light staying on

Costly if missed

2003–2016 · hybrid · Brakes

What to look for: Look for a brake warning light that stays on after start-up, and ask if the brake actuator was replaced in Japan.

Why it matters: Toyota Japan's notice states that heavy brake use wears the solenoid valve section of the brake actuator, illuminating the brake warning lamp, and that continuing to drive brings an audible warning and reduced braking. On the imports named here the part is expensive, and knowing the campaign exists is the difference between a free Japanese repair and a bill in New Zealand.
