What to look for: Switch to READY and listen at the driver's footwell and under the bonnet on the driver's side.
Why it matters: Toyota USA ran a customer support programme for internal malfunctions of the brake booster and booster pump on Prius c built mid-July 2011 to early December 2014 (2012-2014 model years, same car as early Aqua), with codes C1391, C1252, C1256 or C1253.
What to look for: On the test drive watch the battery gauge.
Why it matters: Japanese and NZ sources put typical life at 10-12 years or 150,000-220,000 km for private cars, with first signs from about 100,000-150,000 km; cases at 120,000 km and 180,000 km are common in Japanese workshop logs, and some packs pass 280,000 km.
What to look for: Look at the water pump area at the front of the engine for pink or white crusty coolant residue and check.
Why it matters: Japanese owner logs show failures at about 187,000 km and 200,000 km with the engine check light, and many owners change it pre-emptively around 200,000 km. The pump sits at the top front of the engine and is about a 1-2 hour job; the updated Toyota/Aisin part comes with an improved seal. Coolant must be bled properly afterwards. Left unrepaired this grows into a major repair bill.
What to look for: The inverter pump should give a faint, even hum; a loud drone, grinding, or no sound at all is suspect.
Why it matters: A Japanese owner at 170,000 km had exactly this and paid about 34,000 yen for the pump; another owner at 200,000 km replaced a pump that hummed constantly. Air left in the inverter loop after coolant work can also set codes, so bleeding matters. Left unrepaired this grows into a major repair bill.
What to look for: Look at both headlight lenses for yellowing, clouding, crazing or a patchy recent polish job.
Why it matters: Polishing alone wears off again within months; a proper fix is polishing plus a new urethane clear coat, or new headlight units, and yellowed lenses also reduce how much light reaches the road at night.
