Toyota Prius PHV common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 5 faults the Toyota Prius PHV is known for (2009–2015), 5 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Toyota Prius PHV

Side curtain airbag recall

Safety risk

2009–2012 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Interior and air con

What to look for: Look for a 3835 recall sticker in the driver's door opening, or ask for the Japanese service record showing the airbag recall.

Why it matters: The MLIT notification records that improper handling when the production line stopped left microscopic cracks in the weld of the gas-filled curtain shield airbag inflator. Cabin temperature rising while the car is parked raises the enclosed gas pressure, the weld can fracture and part of the inflator can be projected into the cabin.

Inverter / converter failure

Safety risk

2009–2015 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Hybrid and EV

What to look for: Any red triangle/master warning, or a scan showing P0A94, P324E, P0A1A, P3004, P0A78 or P0A7A, is serious.

Why it matters: Toyota bulletins for 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v list P0A94, P324E, P0A1A and P3004. Symptoms: red triangle, car shuts down or will not go into Ready, loss of drive, 12 V charging warning. Fix is a new or used inverter assembly or IPM. Left unrepaired this is a safety risk on top of the repair bill.

Weak heater and coolant loss

Costly if missed

2015–2019 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Engine

What to look for: Feel for weak heat from the vents with the heater on full when warm, and check the coolant level when cold.

Why it matters: Toyota Japan's notice states that long idling or frequent short trips while the engine is still warming up cycle thermal stress through the exhaust heat recovery heat exchanger, cracking the coolant passage so coolant leaks into the exhaust pipe and falls; the heater then works poorly or the high coolant temperature warning lamp illuminates.

Hybrid battery wear, worse on ex-taxi

Costly if missed

2009–2015 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Hybrid and EV

What to look for: Red triangle or check-engine light; P0A80/P0A7F on a scan.

Why it matters: Failing modules set P0A80 and the red triangle, the engine runs constantly and economy drops. NZ reconditioned packs are the common fix. Left unrepaired this grows into a major repair bill.

Exhaust heat exchanger leaks coolant

Costly if missed

2015–2022 · 2ZR-FXE · hybrid · Exhaust and emissions

What to look for: Engine coolant reservoir low with no visible leak; white steam or sweet smell from the tailpipe; weak heater output.

Why it matters: Toyota bulletin T-SB-0135-19 lists low coolant, check-engine light with P148F00 and poor heater output, and replaces the front pipe with an updated part. Often misdiagnosed as a head gasket; pressure testing tells them apart. Running it low on coolant can still overheat the engine. Left unrepaired this grows into a major repair bill.
