Toyota Tarago common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Toyota Tarago is known for (2006–2019), 3 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Toyota Tarago

Tailgate struts not holding

Costly if missed

2019 · Body and structure

What to look for: Check the fully opened tailgate stays up on its own for 30 seconds, and look for cracks or rust on the struts.

Why it matters: The MLIT improvement-measure notification records that temperature control during the plating process was inadequate, so internal stress from plating produces microscopic cracks on the damper stay surface; the enclosed gas leaks and in the worst case the back door can no longer be held open.

2AZ 2.4 burns oil through the piston

Costly if missed

2006–2019 · 2AZ-FE · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Pull the dipstick: well below the full mark on a car that was 'just serviced' is a warning.

Why it matters: Reports start as low as 70,000 km but most show up from about 100,000-120,000 km and it gets worse with age. Owners often only find out when the dipstick reads empty at a service. Running it low starves the timing chain, VVT and bearings, so a neglected engine can end up knocking or seized. The proper fix is new pistons and rings (engine out) or a replacement engine; thicker oil and additives only slow it.

VVT-i oil feed hose with rubber section

Costly if missed

2006–2019 · 2GR-FE · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Look at the back of the engine for fresh oil wetness or oil on the exhaust.

Why it matters: AustralianCar.Reviews reports it on V6 Taragos at about 70,000-105,000 km. Symptoms are an oil leak at the back of the engine, smoke from oil on the exhaust, an oil pressure light and an abnormal engine noise; if the driver keeps going the engine can be destroyed. The fix is the all-metal replacement line. Left unrepaired this grows into a major repair bill.
