Volkswagen Passat common problems: what to check before you buy
Credov's researched list of the 6 faults the Volkswagen Passat is known for (2006–2010), 6 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

What to look for: On the drive, go through all seven gears and in manual mode, watching for a flashing gear number or loss of drive.
Why it matters: A gearbox failure at speed, as reported on one Passat, is a safety issue on the road, not just a cost one, and owners report mechatronic replacements running into the thousands of dollars more than once on the same car.
What to look for: Start the car from cold five times in a row and watch for a delay, a dash symbol or a sticking key.
Why it matters: Owner reports cluster from about 80,000 to 240,000 km, and because the fault often sets no code early on, a car that 'just needed a jump' may really have this wearing lock unit - a later full-column dealer fix was quoted at well over a thousand dollars.
2005–2009 · AXX, BWA, BPY, EA113 · petrol · Engine
What to look for: On the drive feel for a flat spot or power loss at high revs, which points to low fuel pressure.
Why it matters: Left alone, the cam lobe is ruined and metal goes through the oil, sometimes punching through the pump itself - caught early it is a cheap follower, caught late it is a camshaft and a new pump together.
2006–2015 · BWK, CAVA, CTHA, BMY · petrol · Engine
What to look for: Start the engine stone cold and listen at the gearbox end for a rattle or grinding for a few seconds.
Why it matters: A repeat chain problem within a year of an earlier repair has also been reported, so one past chain job does not rule out another - a jumped chain on this engine bends valves and can mean an engine recondition.
What to look for: Pull away gently uphill and on a turn several times, and feel for vibration or revs flaring unmatched.
Why it matters: Heavy stop-start traffic, creeping on the brake and towing all shorten clutch-pack life, so a car used mainly in town is more likely to need this repair earlier than its odometer alone would suggest.
What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant tank is at MAX, then look for pink crust around the cap and intake.
Why it matters: Low coolant from an undetected leak can overheat the engine and warp the head, and owners report needing this part replaced more than once on the same car, so one past repair does not rule out another leak.
