What to look for: Look for blue smoke when revving after idle, and check the door pillar label or invoice for the care package.
Why it matters: BMW built a dedicated care package around this engine's known wear points. Valve stem seals, timing chains and injectors on a hot-vee V8 are among the most expensive repairs in the BMW range. A car without the package done and with symptoms is a very different purchase from one with it done. The bulletin is a US service action, not a recall, so there is no legal obligation on anyone to have completed it.
What to look for: Check cold-start cranking isn't over about 2 seconds, and ask for invoices showing the high-pressure fuel pumps were replaced.
Why it matters: The extension covers the pump only; a car outside the age window or on the NZ market may not benefit. HPFP failure on the N63T gives limp mode or a no-start, and two pumps means two replacements.
