BMW M4 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the BMW M4 is known for (2014–2020), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the BMW M4

M3/M4 fuel tank seam leak

Safety risk

2014–2020 · S55, S55B30 · petrol · Body and structure

What to look for: Smell for petrol around the rear of the car, and look underneath for damp or staining near the tank.

Why it matters: A leaking tank near a hot exhaust is a fire risk; typically NZ$3,000-$6,500 for a new tank.

S55 crank hub slip

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · S55, S55B30 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Ask for proof of a pinned or keyed crank hub, and check the scan for cam or crank timing codes.

Why it matters: If the hub slips the valves can hit the pistons, which usually means a rebuilt or replaced engine. A tuned car without a pinned hub carries that risk, so price it in or ask for the upgrade first.
