Ford Focus common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 5 faults the Ford Focus is known for (2011–2018), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Ford Focus

Power steering assist can fail

Safety risk

2011–2018 · Suspension and steering

What to look for: On the drive and when parking, feel for the steering suddenly going heavy or notchy, and watch for a steering warning.

Why it matters: Losing power steering assist suddenly, especially mid-corner or while parking, is a safety risk, and the usual fix reported is a replacement steering rack or control module.

Door latch may not latch

Safety risk

2011–2018 · Body and structure

What to look for: Close every door at normal force, then pull the outside handle to confirm it is fully latched.

Why it matters: A door that is not properly latched can open while driving, and a faulty switch in the same latch can also keep the interior light on and drain the battery.

4F27E auto flares and slips

Costly if missed

2005–2011 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: Accelerate gently then firmly from cold and warm, checking for revs flaring on the 2-3 or 3-4 change.

Why it matters: Skipped fluid changes speed up this wear pattern, and once the valve body or solenoids fail the usual fix is a costly rebuild or a replacement gearbox.

Coolant leaks into footwell

Costly if missed

2011–2018 · Interior and air con

What to look for: Press the carpet in both front footwells for dampness and smell for a sweet coolant smell inside.

Why it matters: Left alone the car can run low on coolant and overheat, and some shops quote a full heater matrix replacement with the dash removed, which is an expensive repair.

Rear wheel arch paint loss and rust

Minor

What to look for: Crouch at each rear wheel arch's leading edge, by the bumper join, and look for chipped paint, bubbling or orange rust stains.

Why it matters: Caught early this is a small paint touch-up; left alone the rust spreads under the arch guard and needs arch repair and a repaint, and Ford does not treat it as a warranty corrosion claim.
