Ford Ranger PX2 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the Ford Ranger PX2 is known for (2011–2022), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Ford Ranger PX2

6R80 lead frame wears out

Safety risk

2014–2022 · P4AT, P5AT, 2.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: On the test drive, watch the speedo for sudden drops to zero and feel for a harsh thump slowing to a stop.

Why it matters: A sudden, unexpected downshift while driving is a safety concern as well as a costly transmission repair, and PX2-on trucks are reported to be better but not immune.

Oil pump/chain wears, ticks

Costly if missed

2011–2022 · P5AT, 3.2 Duratorq TDCi, 3.2 · diesel · Engine

What to look for: At hot idle after the drive, listen for ticking or knocking low in the engine and watch for a flickering oil light.

Why it matters: A failing oil pump or its drive chain can starve the engine of oil and, in the worst case, spin a bearing and destroy the engine, so any ticking at idle is worth investigating before buying.
