Ford Ranger Raptor common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the Ford Ranger Raptor is known for (2018–2022), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Ford Ranger Raptor

Wet timing belt can starve oil

Costly if missed

2018–2025 · 2.0 EcoBlue, 2.0 bi-turbo, 2.0 diesel (wet-belt), YN2S · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Ask for oil change receipts at short intervals, and whether the timing belt has been replaced or inspected.

Why it matters: Belt debris blocking the oil pickup starves the whole engine of oil, and the usual result reported is a full engine replacement rather than a simple belt job.

10R80 shudder, harsh shifts

Costly if missed

2018–2022 · 2.0 EcoBlue, 2.0 bi-turbo, YN2S · diesel · Gearbox

What to look for: At a steady 60-100 km/h, feel for a rumble-strip-like shudder from the torque converter.

Why it matters: Valve bodies, clutches, torque converters and solenoids have been reported to fail at low kilometres on this gearbox, and it has been the subject of a US class action, so unresolved shudder or harsh shifts are worth pricing into the purchase.
