What to look for: At idle with the bonnet up, ease off the oil filler cap and listen for a loud whistle or strong suction.
Why it matters: Left unrepaired, the pressure buildup from a split diaphragm pushes oil past the cam and crank seals, so a neglected car can also need seals and, if oil has soaked the belt, the cam belt as well.
What to look for: Ask for a dated receipt showing the belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump within the last 10 years.
Why it matters: A snapped belt on this interference engine wrecks the valves, and reviewers note the water pump often fails before the belt's own interval, so a car with no record of either should be priced as needing the full job.
