Ford ST250 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the Ford ST250 is known for (2012–2018), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Ford ST250

Cracked piston, low compression

Costly if missed

2012–2018 · 2.0 EcoBoost, R9DA, 2.0, 2.0 turbo · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen for an uneven idle or a misfire under light load, and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.

Why it matters: A cracked piston or ring land usually shows as low or zero compression on one cylinder and the fix reported is a short block, a used engine or a forged-piston rebuild, all major jobs.

Synchro wear, grinds 1st/2nd

Costly if missed

2012–2018 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: With the gearbox warm, make brisk 1-2 and 2-3 changes and listen and feel for grinding or baulking.

Why it matters: Worn synchros get progressively worse and a full repair means opening the gearbox, which is a costly manual-transmission job.
