Nissan Patrol Y61 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the Nissan Patrol Y61 is known for (2005–2016), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Nissan Patrol Y61

Takata airbag recall

Safety risk

2008–2016 · Electrical

What to look for: Ask for the Takata airbag replacement record, or check the VIN on the Nissan NZ and NZTA recall sites.

Why it matters: A ruptured inflator can project metal fragments at occupants; Australian notices advised owners to stop driving affected D40s until repaired, and a dealer cannot responsibly retail a vehicle with an open Takata recall.

ZD30 diesel holes a piston

Costly if missed

2005–2016 · ZD30DDTi · diesel · Engine

What to look for: Listen for knocking under load, watch for white or blue exhaust smoke, and check the oil for a diesel smell.

Why it matters: Early (rotary-pump) engines to 2006 were worst; the common-rail engine from about 2007 was better and CarsGuide reports that by the final 2016 builds 'the reports have stopped coming', though its used review says the common-rail version did not fully escape. A rebuild often costs more than an older Patrol is worth.
