What to look for: Drive it warm and listen for a bearing whine that grows over time, and feel for judder on acceleration.
Why it matters: The related Murano Z51 CVT shows the same pattern in the US: whine and slipping from about 130,000 km, and a hard jerk or no drive pulling away from a stop. Nissan Australia advises regular CVT oil changes.
What to look for: Accelerate gently from a stop and feel for shudder or slip, and check reverse and drive engage promptly.
Why it matters: Nissan bulletins blame the steel belt slipping and wearing; fixes run from reprogramming the gearbox computer to a valve body or a whole CVT. In the US, Nissan extended CVT cover on these cars, a sign of how common it is.
