Known problems on the Porsche Boxster (987.1)
IMS bearing failure
Costly if missed
2005–2008 · M96.25, M97.20, M96.26, M97.21 · petrol · Engine
What to look for: Listen at idle and 2,000-3,000 rpm from the rear for a growl, rattle or knocking noise.
Why it matters: An IMS bearing failure usually destroys the engine with little or no warning, and because it can happen at surprisingly low mileage, retrofit history and listening for early noise are the only real protection before buying. A full engine replacement on this generation runs into tens of thousands of dollars.

What to look for: Watch a cold start from behind the car for a dense, lasting cloud of blue or white smoke.
Why it matters: A failed air-oil separator can cause a severe lean-running condition or, in a bad case, hydro-lock the engine, and it is the most common cause of smoke on these cars - often mistaken for worse engine wear. Checking for it directly avoids either an unnecessary walk-away or missing a real fault.

What to look for: Look inside both tailpipes for one side sooty black and the other clean, and listen for a tick.
Why it matters: Bore scoring is the most common serious engine failure on this generation and the only real fix is a full rebuild with new cylinder liners, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The tailpipe and tick checks are simple and can be done on any viewing, so there is no reason to skip them.
