Safety risk
2015–2020 · petrol · Exhaust and emissions
What to look for: Smell around the rear wheel arch and under the back after the drive, and ask about a petrol smell after filling up.
Why it matters: NHTSA's notice says a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases fire risk, and liquid fuel in the EVAP system can also cause rough running after refuelling. The campaign fix is a new suction pump.
What to look for: Look with a torch in each rear wheel arch for a broken spring coil, and check the rear sits level.
Why it matters: NHTSA's notice says a spring fracturing while driving can damage a rear tyre and cause a loss of vehicle control. A broken spring is also a warrant-of-fitness failure.
2011–2019 · Automatic/DSG with manual handbrake and keyless entry (KESSY) · Electrical
What to look for: Check the key won't come out with the lever in Drive, testing on level ground with the handbrake firmly on.
Why it matters: NHTSA's notice says removing the key with the lever out of Park increases the risk of an unintended rollaway that may cause injury or a crash. It is a cheap dealer fix where the campaign is open on the VIN.
