Volkswagen Golf-R common problems: what to check before you buy
Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Volkswagen Golf-R is known for (2009–2013), 3 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

What to look for: Ask for the invoice for the last cambelt, tensioner and water pump, and look for a cambelt-done sticker.
Why it matters: This is an interference engine: a snapped belt or a failed tensioner does not just strand the car, it bends valves and usually wrecks the head. With no belt invoice in the last five years on a car this age, price in the job rather than assume the belt has years left.
What to look for: On the drive, cold and warm, feel for shunts or slips on the shifts and watch for a flashing gear display.
Why it matters: Some of these cars are fixed with a software update and an oil change, but many need a mechatronic repair or replacement; motoring press advice is to be wary of a pre-2013/2014 DSG Golf without knowing what gearbox work has been done.

What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant level, then look under the intake manifold for pink crust or wetness.
Why it matters: Left unaddressed, a slow coolant leak can run the engine low enough to overheat. This part has been revised more than once, so a replacement, not a top-up, is the real fix - and repeat leaks on the same car are common enough that one past replacement does not rule out another leak.
