Known problems on the Porsche 911 Targa (997.1)

IMS bearing failure

Costly if missed

2005–2008 · 96.05, 97.01 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen at idle from the rear of the engine for a grinding or rattling noise that changes with revs.

Why it matters: An IMS bearing failure loses cam timing and typically destroys the engine, which on this generation means a rebuild or replacement costing many thousands of dollars. Because failure can happen with little or no warning, checking for retrofit history and listening for early noise is the only way to catch it before it happens.

Cylinder bore scoring

Costly if missed

2005–2008 · 96.05, 97.01 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Look in both tailpipes for a heavy black, oily soot deposit on one side only, and listen for a tick at idle.

Why it matters: Bore scoring is one of the most common and expensive failures on this generation, and the only real fix is a full engine rebuild with new cylinder liners - a job that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Catching the early signs (the tailpipe soot and the tick) before buying avoids inheriting that bill.
