What to look for: With a torch, look down the back of the engine and at the bellhousing for pink or green coolant crust.
Why it matters: This failure can dump all the engine's coolant with little warning and, if driving continues, overheat and warp the engine; the proper fix needs the intake manifold off and is a big labour job. Confirming the aluminium pipe upgrade has been done removes the risk entirely.
What to look for: Listen at cold start and idle for a light tapping or knock from one bank that fades as it warms.
Why it matters: Once bore scoring starts it can progress to engine failure within a short distance, and a replacement or rebuilt engine usually costs more than the car itself is worth. A specialist borescope inspection before buying is the only sure way to know, but the cold-start tapping test can flag it on the spot.
