Audi A3 (8V) common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Audi A3 (8V) is known for (2012–2016), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Audi A3 (8V)

Gearbox jerks or loses drive

Safety risk

2008–2016 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: Drive in stop-start traffic and feel for judder, jerky take-off or sudden loss of drive, and ask for the gearbox recall record.

Why it matters: Five Australian recalls on this gearbox: sulphur in the gear oil and mechatronic corrosion blowing the gearbox fuse (sudden total loss of drive to the wheels if it happens while moving), then a cracked pressure accumulator inside the mechatronics (drive interrupted as though the clutch were depressed). Unrepaired examples can lose drive in traffic, and a mechatronic replacement is a four-figure repair.

Piston ring wear and oil burning

Costly if missed

2012–2017 · 2.0 TFSI EA888 gen 3 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Check the oil level, look for blue smoke at cold start, and ask if the pistons have been replaced.

Why it matters: A US class action (Gonzalez v. Volkswagen Group of America, D.N.J. 1:21-cv-15026, filed 9 Aug 2021) alleges that piston rings in these engines fail to seat and can fracture; a settlement reached preliminary approval and a claims site went live in 2024, covering 75% of repair cost for 9 yr / 90,000 mi in the United States.

Fuel pump failure

Costly if missed

2013–2014 · 1.4 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Check for long cranking or stalling, and ask if the fuel pump recall was done.

Why it matters: Australian recall PRA 2015/14942: the fuel delivery pump may fail so the vehicle can no longer be started or driven, which the register entry records as a hazard to occupants and other road users. It is a breakdown and stranding risk rather than a fire risk, and the cost lands on whoever retails the car.

Water pump module coolant leak

Costly if missed

2013–2020 · CJSA, CZPB, CJXB, CJXC · petrol · Engine

What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant level and look below the intake manifold for pink crust or wetness.

Why it matters: A leaking module that is ignored can overheat the engine, and coolant that reaches the wiring harness can cause separate electrical faults and an EPC warning light. Replacing the whole module and pump is a specific repair job, so evidence of a leak or a prior replacement affects what the car is worth.
