Rear axle nut fault and tyre wear

2019–2021 · Suspension and steering
What to look for: Ask for both rear axle recall records, and feel the rear tyres for uneven or inner-edge wear.
Why it matters: Australian register REC-001665 (September 2021): out-of-spec rear axle nuts can break, letting the wishbone and hub carrier move and the rear axle steer itself. REC-005076 (March 2022): the first repair can misalign the axle, causing rapid tyre wear and a possible sudden flat.
What to look for: Feel for the brake pedal slowly sinking under steady pressure with the engine running, and ask for the brake recall records.
Why it matters: Australian recalls PRA 2019/17525 (campaign 47O9: brake master cylinder wall thickness may not meet specification, so it may leak and the hydraulic brake system fail) and PRA 2018/16853 (campaign 47N6: rear brake pistons coated incorrectly, increasing pedal travel and stopping distances). Both register entries record an increased risk of a collision.
What to look for: Look under the rear seat cushion edge for stains, sticky residue or corrosion, and ask if the recall was done.
Why it matters: Australian register REC-005077 (March 2022): liquid reaching the network management unit can put the engine into emergency mode, interrupt drive and reduce steering assistance at once.
