Audi Q7 common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Audi Q7 is known for (2006–2015), 4 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Audi Q7

Rear coil spring snaps

Safety risk

What to look for: Lie beside each rear wheel with a torch, check the bottom spring coil for a break, and look for a low corner.

Why it matters: A broken rear spring can damage the tyre it rests against and upsets the car's handling, and it can fail suddenly rather than giving much warning, so checking both rear springs directly is worth the minute it takes.

3.0 TDI timing chain stretch

Costly if missed

2006–2015 · BUG, CASA, CJMA, CRCA · diesel · Engine

What to look for: At a cold start, listen from the back of the engine and under the car near the gearbox for a rattle.

Why it matters: A failed timing chain on this engine can destroy it outright, and because the chains are at the back of the engine the repair job means removing the engine or gearbox, making it one of the most expensive repairs on a Q7.

Sunroof leak floods electronics

Costly if missed

2006–2015 · Electrical

What to look for: Press the carpet in all footwells and under the driver's seat for damp, and test the MMI and camera.

Why it matters: Water reaching the amplifier, MMI or the battery area can cause expensive electrical failures, including the car not starting, so confirming the sunroof drains clear properly and the carpets are dry protects against a costly hidden fault.

3.0 TFSI oil use, piston fail

Costly if missed

2015–2019 · CREC · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Read the oil level on the MMI screen, ask how often it needs topping up, and watch for blue smoke under load.

Why it matters: Heavy oil use on this engine is linked to misfires and eventual piston and bore damage, and the repair can mean a new set of pistons and rings or a replacement engine, both major costs.
