Audi A3 Cabriolet (8P) common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 2 faults the Audi A3 Cabriolet (8P) is known for (2005–2013), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Audi A3 Cabriolet (8P)

1.4 TFSI timing chain rattle

Costly if missed

2008–2013 · CAXC, CAXA, EA111 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen at a stone-cold start for a metallic rattle from the timing end that fades as oil pressure builds.

Why it matters: A stretched chain that jumps timing can let the valves meet the pistons, which usually means a full engine rebuild running into thousands of dollars. No recall or warranty extension covers this fault in New Zealand, so chain and service history are the only protection against buying someone else's expensive rebuild.

2.0 TFSI cam follower wear

Costly if missed

2005–2013 · AXX, BWA, BPY, BHZ · petrol · Engine

What to look for: On the test drive, accelerate hard to high revs and feel for hesitation, stumbling or an EPC light.

Why it matters: Once the follower wears through, metal from the worn fuel pump and camshaft can circulate in the engine oil, and the repair runs from camshaft replacement to a full pump and cam job. Catching it as a cheap follower swap instead of a camshaft job is the difference between a minor service item and an expensive repair.
