Subaru Levorg common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 7 faults the Subaru Levorg is known for (2014–2020), 7 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Subaru Levorg

Fuel pump fault and stalling

Safety risk

2018–2019 · FA20, FA20DIT, FB16DIT, EZ36 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Check the fuel pump recall is done, and listen for a long crank at cold start or a stumble at 2,500 rpm.

Why it matters: Stall-while-driving hazard; the fix is a replacement pump under the campaign, so an open campaign should be closed before sale.

Park brake rollaway fault

Costly if missed

2015–2019 · Brakes

What to look for: Check the park brake recall is done, and that the electric park brake holds on a slope in Neutral.

Why it matters: Rollaway hazard per the register. Cheap to close but must be confirmed before retail.

Engine light or slow starting

Costly if missed

2020–2022 · CB18, FA24 · petrol · Exhaust and emissions

What to look for: Check the engine light goes out, and feel for slow starting or a flat spot on a full-throttle pull.

Why it matters: Subaru told MLIT that the EGR pressure sensor did not have enough resistance to exhaust gas, that exhaust gas corrodes it, and that the sensor output then goes wrong: the warning lamp lights, acceleration suffers, and in the worst case the engine cannot be started. These are recent, low-kilometre imports arriving in New Zealand now, and the remedy is a corrected sensor plus an engine control program rewrite.

Bilstein dampers leak

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · Suspension and steering

What to look for: With a torch, check each damper body, especially the rear, for oil wetness running down it.

Why it matters: A leaking or worn damper on this car is a common and known fault, and genuine replacements are both expensive and hard to source quickly, so confirming the suspension's condition now avoids a long wait and a big bill later.

Park brake sticks on/off

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · Brakes

What to look for: Apply and release the electric park brake on a slope, checking it releases fully without grinding.

Why it matters: A park brake that will not release can leave the car unable to move, and one that will not apply is a real safety risk on a slope; this is worth testing directly rather than assuming the warning light tells the whole story.

CVT leak, burning smell

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: With a torch, check the top of the gearbox and the exhaust below it for oily wetness.

Why it matters: Fluid dripping onto a hot exhaust is a fire and smell concern as well as a sign of a leak that usually needs the gearbox out to fix properly; this is one of the most common repairs reported on this model and worth checking directly.

CVT shudders, slips, flares

Costly if missed

2014–2020 · petrol · Gearbox

What to look for: Pull away gently and moderately from a stop several times, feeling for shudder, slip or rev flare.

Why it matters: Slip or persistent shudder on this CVT points to worn internal parts rather than just old fluid, and a replacement unit can cost many thousands; some cars have needed two gearboxes under warranty, which shows how serious a confirmed fault can be.
