What to look for: Press the brake hard on the drive and feel for a stiff, high pedal that needs far more push than normal.
Why it matters: Without brake assist the car takes much more force and distance to stop, which raises the risk of a crash, especially in an emergency stop. The fix is a cheap part, but the car should not be driven normally until it is done.
Typical repair: NZ$150–NZ$500 in New Zealand · A$150–A$520 in Australia
What to look for: Pull away gently from a stop and listen and feel for a groaning knock or a clunk as the clutch bites.
Why it matters: A loose or broken mount bolt lets the engine and gearbox shift on their mounts, which wears the gear change and can damage hoses and wiring nearby. It is a moderate repair if caught early, but it tends to come back if the updated part was not fitted.
Typical repair: NZ$300–NZ$900 in New Zealand · A$310–A$930 in Australia
What to look for: Drive at light throttle around 2,000-3,000 rpm with the window down and listen for a metallic buzz or rattle.
Why it matters: On its own the rattle is mostly an annoyance, but a rattle together with flat spots or a warning light suggests the wastegate is wearing and may need turbo work. Use it to ask questions and price the car.
