Mini Cooper / Cooper S Countryman (R60) common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 3 faults the Mini Cooper / Cooper S Countryman (R60) is known for (2010–2013), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Mini Cooper / Cooper S Countryman (R60)

Oil leak near the oil pump

Costly if missed

2010–2013 · N16, N18 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Look under the engine with a torch for a fresh oil leak near the oil pump, and check the ground for drips.

Why it matters: The bulletin describes oil leaking from the oil pump volume control solenoid and migrating inside the electrical harness; if oil is present in the DME connector the engine section of the wire harness and the DME also require replacement. What looks like a minor drip can be an ECU-and-loom bill.

Oil leak between engine and gearbox

Costly if missed

2007–2016 · Gearbox

What to look for: Look under the car with a torch for fresh oil where the engine and gearbox join, and check the ground for drips.

Why it matters: The source states that transmission fluid may leak from the input shaft seal and that if too much fluid leaks the car will not drive. The seal itself is cheap; the gearbox has to come out, so the labour is what you are pricing.

Coolant temperature sensor fault

Keep an eye on

2010–2012 · N14, N16, N18 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Look for the newer temperature sensor in the top coolant hose or bleed screw, and note any hard starting or warning lights.

Why it matters: SI M17 07 12 / M17 08 12 (R56, N14/N16/N18) and SI M17 04 12 / M17 05 12 (R60, N16/N18) describe internal corrosion bridging the sensor contacts and giving inaccurate engine temperature readings, causing difficulty starting and/or illumination of the Service Engine Soon lamp. Low cost, but a false reading also masks a real overheating problem.
