Known problems on the Mini Cooper / Cooper S / JCW (R56)

Water in the driver footwell

Costly if missed

2007–2014 · Electrical

What to look for: Feel under the driver's floor mat for damp carpet, and check all lights, windows and central locking work.

Why it matters: NHTSA 23V-337 records that the electronic control module in the driver's side footwell may short-circuit due to corrosion from water and road salt, which can increase the risk of a fire; MINI's remedy is to inspect the sunroof drains, the footwell area and the FRM and replace parts as required.

Thermostat housing coolant leak

Minor

2007–2016 · N12, N14, N16, N18 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Look below the thermostat housing and on top of the gearbox for crusty pink or white coolant marks or dampness.

Why it matters: A brittle housing lets coolant pool on the transmission; the source links it to P0597, slow warm-up and possible overheating. Cheap part, but an overheated Prince engine is not cheap.

Worn front suspension bushes

Minor

2007–2013 · Suspension and steering

What to look for: Feel on the drive for loose or vague steering, and listen for knocks over speed bumps and rough roads.

Why it matters: The source describes the rear bushes on the front wishbone as wearing over time, with more durable bushes a common modification. Cheap on its own, but it is the difference between a car that steers like a Mini and one that does not, and split or separated suspension rubber is something to have assessed against WoF requirements before sale.
