What to look for: Listen at cold start for rough running, check for an engine light, and ask if the engine software update was done.
Why it matters: The bulletin attributes rough running and the camshaft faults it lists (BMW DME codes 130104, 130108, 130304, 130308, 130E11, 130E20 and 130F20, read with dealer-level diagnostics, not a basic OBD2 reader) either to DME software or to mechanical failure of the VANOS actuators / central bolt valves. The software case is a dealer visit; the mechanical case is two actuators and labour.
What to look for: Listen for a knock or pop from the front at full lock each way, standing still and creeping in a tight circle.
