What to look for: Ask for the power steering recall record, and feel on the drive for any loss of steering assist or warning.
Why it matters: The Australian recall describes moisture penetrating the plug-in connection of the EPS adapter cable, causing electro-corrosion on the contacts and posing a fire hazard, on diesel R60 Countryman available for sale before 18 March 2013. No NZ or Japanese equivalent was retrieved, so confirm by VIN.
What to look for: Listen at cold idle for a loud regular ticking from the gearbox end of the engine that follows engine speed.
Why it matters: The source describes excessively sharp crankshaft-sprocket teeth on pre-March-2011 N47 engines damaging or breaking the timing chain, with catastrophic engine damage if it breaks. The chains sit at the rear of the engine, so the engine comes out; on pre-May-2009 builds the crankshaft is replaced too.
