Timing chain rattle
Costly if missed

What to look for: Listen at cold start for a metal rattle from the right-hand end of the engine in the first 30 seconds.
Why it matters: Manufacturer bulletins SI M11 02 07 and SI B11 04 13, as indexed by AustralianCar.Reviews, describe low tensioner spring force on N14 engines leading to a rattle on cold start, and a service action (code 61) to inspect the tensioner.
What to look for: Check the oil level is not low, and watch for blue exhaust smoke on a cold start or after idling.
Why it matters: A torn PCV membrane with new valve stem seals is a modest job, but worn rings and scored bores mean an engine rebuild; running the engine low on oil in between also speeds up timing chain and turbo wear, compounding the other N14 faults.
