Mini Countryman (R60) common problems: what to check before you buy

Credov's researched list of the 4 faults the Mini Countryman (R60) is known for (2006–2016), 2 of them serious or costly. Each one says what to look for when you check the car, so you can spot it before you buy. Not every car has these faults: they are the ones worth checking on this model.

Known problems on the Mini Countryman (R60)

Chain tensioner rattle or oil leak

Costly if missed

2007–2011 · N12, N14, N16, N18 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen for a chain rattle at cold start, and look for oil weeping around the tensioner at the belt end.

Why it matters: SI M11 03 11 states the original seal ring material was too soft, causing loss of chain tension and/or an oil leak at the tensioner on N12, N14, N16 and N18 engines produced to Nov 2011. Loss of tension is the same failure path as the N14 item above; this bulletin is what extends the concern to the non-turbo cars.

Timing chain wear

Costly if missed

2014–2016 · N16B16 · petrol · Engine

What to look for: Listen at a fully cold start for a rattle or marbles-in-a-tin noise from the front right of the engine.

Why it matters: A worn chain caught early is a chain-kit job; left alone it can jump teeth and bend valves, turning it into an engine repair. It is reported from around 90,000 km.

Clear coat peeling

Minor

2006–2016 · Body and structure

What to look for: Check the roof, spoiler, bonnet and fuel cap for dull, milky or flaking patches in the paint.

Why it matters: Once the clear coat starts lifting it keeps spreading and a touch-up will not stop it; the affected panels need to be stripped back and resprayed, which is a cosmetic repair but can run into the thousands of dollars.

Boot release button fails

Minor

2006–2016 · Body and structure

What to look for: Press the tailgate release button several times with the car unlocked, then try the key fob remote.

Why it matters: A failed switch can leave the boot unable to be opened by hand at all, which is inconvenient day to day and a real problem if the remote battery or the car's electrics fail.
