Known problems on the Mini JCW (R50/R53)

Power steering pump failure

Costly if missed

2001–2006 · petrol · Suspension and steering

What to look for: On the test drive, do several slow parking turns and feel for the steering suddenly going heavy.

Why it matters: The steering can go heavy without warning, often mid-manoeuvre; a new fan is a cheap fix but a replacement pump is the usual cure once it starts.

Window regulator failure

Minor

2005–2008 · petrol · Body and structure

What to look for: Run each window up and down twice and watch for one that drops back, sticks or goes up crooked.

Why it matters: A failed regulator can leave a window stuck down or unable to seal, letting rain in and risking the glass itself, and on the Convertible a weak regulator can stop the roof opening or closing properly.
